COD HUNTER FISHING TOURS

Cod Hunter Fishing Tours has had a tremendous start to our business. We advertised on regional television when we first commenced our business on January 30th 2005. We subsequently followed that up with distribution of brochures through out Victoria and Southern New South Wales. The response has been outstanding within the first six months of operation we had in excess of 350 inquiries far exceeding any of our expectations. Our first clients were Andrew and Steve Morris who chose to do a local trip to the Loddon River. They managed two quality fish with Steve landing his first ever Murray cod casting lures within the first hour of hitting the water. Our second trip was to Lake Mulwala, our client was Darryl Hislop who managed to land a total of 17 Murray cod and Golden perch all while casting lures. He managed to land these with a mixture of lures, spinnerbaits, hardbodies and a couple of Murray cod on surface lures. The proceeding five months proved to be very busy for Cod Hunter Fishing Tours. Clients were rewarded with some terrific captures. There were many highlights throughout the first season of operation. Peter Edwards from Bendigo did a trip with his brother in law Ken and Peter Managed to land his first ever Murray cod on a lure which measured 90cm and had an approximate weight of 15kg. Mark Andriske managed to land a Murray cod measuring 107cm while casting a Bassman spinnerbait in Lake Mulwala.

The season of 2006 has proved to be extremely successful for Cod Hunter Fishing Tours. The amount of repeat clients has been terrific, with one client now doing a total of seven trips since we started operation. In the 2006 season bookings were running six weeks in advance for the busiest months of the year (DEC-JUNE). Some terrific natives were again caught by clients this year. Two Murray cod over the Magical Metre Mark were caught casting by clients with Cod Hunter Fishing Tours. Several other very large Murray cod were also missed while on tour. Hopefully some valuable lessons were learnt by clients and they may land these fish in the future. The numbers of Murray cod that ranged from 75cm to 95cm was very good and hopefully these quality fish will again be about in good numbers this up coming season. The numbers of fish caught and released for this six months was exceptional with clients landing a total of 534 Murray cod and golden perch. For the months of December, January and February we had an average of 10 fish per day. In March, April and May we saw the average start to drop, but as always the average size increased towards the end of the season. By the middle of June the average had dropped to 7 fish per day. It was at this time my family and I took a well deserved break.

Another highlight in 2006 was filming a segment with Offshore Productions at Lake Mulwala. We managed to catch a Murray cod that measured 102cm as well as a number of smaller fish. It is currently available on "The Fishing DVD number 5" . We have just recently filmed another segment with Offshore Productions with Brad Sissins from Daiwa at the Loddon River at Bridgewater in Central Victoria. we had a terrific time and managed to catch some great numbers of fish, Murray cod, golden perch, redfin and European carp were all caught on lures. This segment will be on volume 7 and will be out in April.

With spring drawing to a close we have seen the water temperatures rise and the natives are again active. Our Bookings are already starting to fill up and it is advisable to get in early while vacancies remain. From the start of the Murray cod season the 1st of December our bookings start to increase dramatically. At this stage we have had very little rainfall during what is traditionally the wettest months of the year. The minimal rainfall has seen our water ways running extremely clear. This is terrific for fishing and already good numbers are being caught. The low rainfall has seen the water authorities make the decision that the irrigation season is going to finish a month early this year. This is going to be of a huge benefit to those anglers who are chasing the large Murray cod at the end of the season. The improved water clarity and higher water temperatures will undoubtedly produce another excellent season ahead.

I would personally like to thank all of those clients who chose to spend some time with us in 2005 and 2006. I would also like to thank our sponsors, Daiwa, Custom Crafted Lures, Bassman spinnerbaits, Goulburn Lures and Minn Kota for there terrific support. I look forward to meeting up with our many repeat clients and new clients over the up coming season in 2007.

Catch you soon Roger Miles
